![]() Every pair of Bald Mountain Moccasins is custom-fitted to the customer's leg and foot, designed to their specifications and hand-crafted in our workshop. We've provided some information below to help you design your boots. About leathers: A good portion of the leather we use is from
the governments of the Americas. They need to keep the herds at a certain size due to space, feed requirements, to control danger to the land, disease, age factor, and to keep a proper male to female ratio throughout the herd population. For example, with Bison you need at least five females to each male or the males will fight and kill each other. All our leather is top of the line and we pay more to hand pick the hides before we buy them. There are an assortment of colors and you can choose to build the moccasins all one color or contrast it with the front trim, tabs and heel piece in another shade at no extra charge. Leather choices: There are many leathers to choose from. The following should help you choose the one that best suits your personal needs. Bison and Water Buffalo are the longest wearing leathers and they keep looking the best over time. They also polish up nicely with shoe polish. Elk and Moose are softer (spongier) and tend to discolor and scuff easier than other leathers. These are very comfortable and feel great. Cowhide will only last three to five years, it is thinner, warmer, and comes in more colors. Buffalo makes the best heel pieces because it is very scuff resistant. This is good for those who drive a vehicle a lot. Deerskin is only used as trim because it is not durable enough for the main material in the construction of a moccasin. Trim pieces are usually thinner than the main materials of the body of the moccasins. The boots are made from durable Buffalo or Bull hides, but can be decorated with cow leather or deerskin. Boot colors can include Black, Chocolate Brown, Cedar, Redwood, Forest Green and Sand but are decorated using a wide range of colors. Buttons: Boots can vary in size from an ankle-high 3-button boot to a calf-high 9-button boot. Buttons can be Antler (natural, polished, dyed or burned), Pewter (with designs too numerous to mention here) or coin (American quarters and half-dollars, Canadian quarters, Mexican pesos, Irish harps, English half-pennies, and more). The English Half Penny is our standard or "free" button. Soles: Soles can be Vibrum (with wedge or heel), Birkenstock or Conveyor Belt. Design: We have a number of popular designs to choose from but you can work with our trained staff in designing your boots with something unique and personalized to your tastes. See our Design Samples page for pictures illustrating the variety of possibilities. You can order your own special design or artwork to be incorporated into your moccasins. The price varies depending on the amount of work and materials used to create your design. Lining: Boots can be ordered with a removable sheepskin liner for warmth and comfort. This is #1 quality sheepskin, Which is removable for hand washing in non detergent soaps such as "Woolite". Prices: see "Purchase Boots" page |
